Drinking water in Laval
Laval produces its water at three plants. Chomedey and Pont-Viau draw from the Rivière des Prairies, whose water comes almost entirely from the Ottawa River; Sainte-Rose draws from the Mille Îles River. Together they produce 200 million litres a day across a 1,650 km network.
The City publishes a hardness of 50.9 mg/L at Chomedey, 50.3 at Pont-Viau and 61.3 at Sainte-Rose — soft water, which the City itself calls moderately soft. The 2025 report is excellent: 1,934 microbiological samples, no E. coli, a single total-coliform detection all year.
That leaves lead. Since 2007 Laval has systematically replaced the public portion of lead service lines, and its municipal plan estimates around fifty lead connections still in place. If your home is older, that's the question to ask — and a test at your tap answers it in minutes.
Frequently asked questions — Laval
No, it's soft. The City publishes 50.9 mg/L CaCO₃ for the Chomedey plant, 50.3 for Pont-Viau and 61.3 for Sainte-Rose — roughly 3 to 3.6 grains per gallon. A softener is generally unnecessary in Laval: the issue here is the quality of the water you drink, not limescale.
