Water, region by region

Lanaudière

One region, two regimes. Joliette and Repentigny draw surface water treated in a plant and tracked by a public annual report anyone can read. Further north, thousands of homes take their water from a well that nobody tests for them. The first case is a question of taste; the second, a question of the unknown.

Laurentides

Here, every town has its own source. Saint-Jérôme draws from the Rivière du Nord, Sainte-Agathe from Lac Grignon, and Mont-Tremblant runs three separate networks depending on the sector. In Saint-Colomban, most homes are connected to no municipal system at all. No generalisation holds in the Laurentians: it is town by town, and sometimes sector by sector.

Rive-Nord de Montréal

This is the most uniformly served of the three regions: nearly everyone is connected to a municipal network fed by the Rivière des Mille Îles or the St. Lawrence. The variable is therefore not the source but the age of the building — pre-1975 lead service lines are what sets one address apart from the next.
