Water softener or reverse osmosis: which one do you need?

These are not two versions of the same device, and one does not replace the other. A softener is installed on your home's main water line and removes calcium and magnesium to protect plumbing, the water heater and appliances from scale. A reverse osmosis system is installed under a single sink and purifies the water you drink and cook with. If your problem is scale and white spots, you need a softener. If it is taste, odour or what your water contains, you need reverse osmosis. Many Quebec homes need both.

What a softener does, and what it does not
A softener treats hardness, meaning the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium. It works by ion exchange: a resin captures those two minerals and releases a small amount of sodium in return. That is why softened water is slightly saltier, and why anyone on a strict low-sodium diet should raise it with their doctor.
It is installed on the main water line, so the whole house benefits. Less scale in the water heater, fewer deposits on fixtures, soap that lathers properly, laundry that feels softer.
A softener purifies nothing, however. It removes neither chlorine, nor lead, nor nitrates, nor PFAS. Softened water is not cleaner water: it is water that is gentler on your pipes.
What reverse osmosis does
Reverse osmosis pushes water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane with pores on the order of 0.0001 micron. At that scale water molecules pass through and most dissolved substances stay behind: heavy metals, nitrates, chlorine and its by-products, and a large share of PFAS.
It is installed at the point of use, almost always under the kitchen sink, with a dedicated faucet. It therefore treats the water you drink and cook with — not your shower or your washing machine.
It also reduces the hardness of the water passing through it. But because it treats a single point of use, it protects neither your water heater nor your appliances. It is not a solution to scale.
How to tell which one you need
The most reliable shortcut is to look at where the problem shows up. White spots on dishes, a scaling water heater, soap that will not lather, skin that feels tight after a shower: that is hardness, and it belongs to the softener.
A chlorine or earthy taste, an odour, a concern about lead, nitrates or PFAS, or well water whose composition you do not know: that belongs to reverse osmosis.
If both descriptions sound familiar, you do not have to choose: the two are complementary and work well together. A softener upstream actually extends the life of the reverse osmosis membrane, which very hard water fouls faster.
Why to start with a water test
Neither device should be chosen by guesswork. Hardness is measured in milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate, and it varies enormously between Quebec municipalities — sometimes between neighbourhoods, when a city draws on more than one source.
A water test takes a few minutes and gives you numbers. That is the difference between a recommendation and a guess, and it is why ours is free: no sensible installation happens without one.
What you will not hear elsewhere
- If scale is your only problem, reverse osmosis is not the right answer — and we will tell you so. We install reverse osmosis systems; we do not sell softeners. If a softener is what you need, better to know right away.
- Softened water contains more sodium than the original water. The amount stays small, but if you follow a strict salt-free diet, it is worth raising with your doctor.
- A softener does not make water drinkable. Hard water is not dangerous: it is inconvenient. Blurring those two is the industry's most common sales argument.
